Executive Summary

Christopher O’Connor is a partner in our Litigation Department in our Vancouver office, and served as National Leader of this department from 2004 to 2011. Chris focuses his commercial litigation practice primarily on construction law, fidelity and surety bonds, insurance defence, commercial fraud, banking litigation, and arbitration and mediation with an emphasis on commercial disputes. He is recognized as a leading lawyer in these areas of law by the foremost legal rankings publications.

Chris has particularly extensive experience in advising owners and contractors with respect to construction disputes, delay claims and all forms of construction disputes. He also advises sureties with respect to contractor defaults and L&M bond claims; and fidelity insurers with respect to coverage issues under brokers’ blanket bonds, bankers’ blanket bonds and subrogation claims arising from such disputes. As well, he has acted in the field of arbitration and mediation, and sits frequently as an arbitrator; he has deep experience in all manner of international and domestic commercial disputes.

Representative Work

  • Acted for clients on major projects including the Capilano Twin Tunnel Project, the Port Mann Bridge, the Brilliant Power Expansion, the Lions Gate Bridge Re-Decking, The Millennium Line, construction of manufacturing plants, and construction of Expo ‘86 ALRT Guideway.
  • Acted for clients in major crises including the Save-On Foods roof collapse; the failure of post-tension cables in buildings; claims arising out of the construction of hydro facilities, wastewater treatment plants; and bridges, highways and recreational centres.
  • Acted for various parties in the leaky-condo crisis in British Columbia, including the Ministry of Education with respect to leaky schools.
  • Extensive experience as an arbitrator and mediator.
