Executive Summary

John is a strategic advisor to some of the firm’s longstanding clients. His advice covers a wide range of issues including, corporate governance. In addition, John is a leading lawyer in construction law and regularly represents general contractors, bonding companies, insurers (professional liability of architects and engineers) subcontractors and owners in construction matters of all nature. He is involved in large, complex construction matters and surety workouts. He is currently advising on one of the largest infrastructure projects in Canada, namely the New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project. He has advised on call for tenders, construction contracts (design build, project management, BOT, PPP) and construction claims (extras, loss of productivity, change in design or methods of performance of the work) and has regularly pleaded before all jurisdiction in Québec. John represents manufacturers in product liability matters and specializes in matters of fidelity insurance and commercial fraud.

John has a Civil law degree from Sherbrooke University (1989) and a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University (1986). He was called to the Québec Bar in 1990. Between 2003 and 2014, he was a member of the Partnership Board, of which he was Chair for the 2006-2007 term. He is the former Regional Managing Partner of BLG’s Montréal office (2006-2017). He has been recognized in the 2018 edition (and since 2008) of The Best Lawyers in Canada (Construction Law). Martindale-Hubbell BV distinguished peer review rated.

  • Represents manufacturers and defends product liability claims concerning: recreational equipment, commercial building equipment, commercial transportation equipment, hands tools, paint and other specialized equipment.
  • Advises fidelity insurers with respect to coverage issues; investigates and defends claims as well as analyzes defence options.
  • Advises insurers and clients alike on directors' and officers' liability.
