Executive Summary

John was appointed National Managing Partner and CEO of BLG in 2018.

John has spent his entire legal career at BLG as a leading lawyer with a successful practice advising a wide variety of clients in the construction industry or involved in major infrastructure projects.

Throughout that time, he has also held significant leadership positions within the Firm, including as member of the Partnership Board, the National Management Committee and as the Managing Partner of the Montréal office for over 11 years.

He has also demonstrated success as a dynamic business leader, served as a strategic advisor to some of BLG’s longstanding clients and promoted commitment to the community through his involvement with several boards and organizations.

Representative Work

  • Advising SSLC in connection with risks and issues relating to the new Champlain Bridge Project in Montréal, Québec.
  • Advising contractors and developers in private arbitration and mediation on construction matters.
  • Advising on all aspects of suretyship law including claims related to performance and labour material bond limits and indemnity agreements.
  • Advising on call for tenders, construction contracts (design build, project management (BOT, PPP)).
  • Drafting and negotiating construction claims for extras, loss of productivity, change in design or methods of performance of the work.
  • Advising on the professional liability of architects and engineers and other insurance-related topics.
  • Representing manufacturers and defending product liability claims concerning: recreational equipment, commercial building equipment, commercial transportation equipment, hand tools, paint and other specialized equipment.
  • Advising fidelity insurers with respect to coverage issues; investigating and defending claims as well as analyzing defence options.
  • Advising insurers and clients alike on directors’ and officers’ liability.
