Executive Summary

Julia Law is an associate in the Insurance and Tort Liability Group in our Vancouver office.

Julia practices civil litigation with a focus in insurance defence litigation. She has experience with high complexity files and novel issues in major loss claims. Julia has appeared before the British Columbia Supreme Court on various insurance defence matters including acting as defence counsel in jury trials. She has appeared in numerous contested applications including application to dismiss for want of prosecution, application to compel attendance at independent medical examinations and application for document production. She has also conducted numerous mediations.

Before practicing as a lawyer, Julia worked as a secondary school teacher at the Vancouver School Board.

Representative Work

  • McCrory v. Komar, co-counsel for the defendant in a 13 day jury trial with various interlocutory applications during trial including adverse inference for not calling treating clinicians, admissibility of hearsay evidence in expert reports, admissibility of inflammatory evidence and adding the issue of mitigation in the jury charge. Obtained jury verdict in favour of the defendant.
  • Baker v. Surerus, co-counsel for the defendant in a 20 day jury trial. Settlement achieved during trial.
  • Johnston v. Leginus, defended and successfully obtained order for application to compel attendance at an independent medical examination.
  • Rhodes v. Ma, defended and successfully obtained order for application to compel attendance at an independent medical examination.
  • Bennis v Santos-Marchant, defended and successfully obtained order for application to compel attendance at an independent medical examination.
  • Defended and successfully resolved various motor vehicle accident claims, including Underinsured Motorist Protection claims, at mediation and other forms of alternative dispute resolution.
