Patrick Heinsen  


Executive Summary

Patrick Heinsen is a partner in the Corporate Commercial Litigation and Arbitration Group in our Calgary office. Patrick primarily practises civil litigation, with a focus on commercial construction, insurance, product liability and intellectual property-related matters.

Patrick is a veteran of numerous trials, arbitrations and mediations and has appeared before all levels of court in Alberta. He has also conducted matters in the courts of British Columbia and Saskatchewan as well as the Federal Court of Canada. Patrick’s focus is on commercial litigation including shareholder disputes, fraud and contractual claims. He has acted in matters including commercial disputes, construction and engineering claims (including P3s), professional negligence (engineering), product liability, patent infringement and personal injury.

In addition to maintaining his practice, Patrick has published several articles and given many presentations for continuing education programs in the insurance, construction and legal communities.

Representative Work

  • Regularly represents owners, general contracting firms and subcontractors on matters ranging from residential construction to major infrastructure projects throughout western Canada.
  • Has represented architectural firms and developers on building failures to global engineering firms on disputes including pipeline failures, SAGD and ISCG projects, hydraulic projects and fire losses.
  • Serves as panel counsel to several insurers (including Lloyd’s syndicates) and acts regularly for same defending claims brought against insureds as well as providing opinions respecting Builders Risk/COC, ​​Commercial Host Liability, CGL and D&O policy coverage issues.
