Executive Summary

Marie Garel practices in our Labour and Employment Group in Montréal. 

Her practice covers all aspects of labour and employment law, as it affects both unionized and non-unionized companies, of small, medium or large sizes.

Marie advises employers on corporation reorganizations, the hiring and firing of employees, disciplinary measures, individual and group layoffs, staff assessment management (performance and work attendance), workplace investigations of all kinds, labour relations, occupational health and safety, and human rights.

She is called upon to represent clients before the Tribunal administratif du travail (on labour relations and workplace health and safety matters), the Canada Labour Relations Board and the regular courts.

Marie also has expertise and a practical and current understanding of the complex and specialized field of pension plans.

Representative Work

  • Advises employers on various complex legal aspects of pension plans.
  • Advises employers on various aspects of labour and employment law, including grievance arbitration, privacy complaints, human rights, labour standards, termination of employment, occupational health and safety, pay equity, industrial accidents and occupational diseases.
  • Acts for employers before human rights tribunals, administrative tribunals and the civil courts, both federal and provincial.
  • Drafts collective agreements as well as confidentiality, non-solicitation and non-competition clauses.
  • Assists her colleagues in due diligence work related to major business transactions.  
  • Provides training sessions for client companies on various aspects of labour and employment law, including labour standards, pay equity, industrial accidents and occupational diseases.

  • Marie Garel has given several lectures to the Association des trésorières et des trésoriers des instituts religieux (ATTIR) on various subjects connected with labour law, in continuing training activities covering all aspects of the management, financing and administration of religious institutes.
