The first half of 2015 has been, as always, an exciting time at BLG. We helped clients achieve success in a number of major transactions and precedent-setting cases, and were recognized for our expertise in 21 practice areas in the 2015 edition of Chambers Global — The World's Leading Lawyers for Business.

Among the many newsworthy cases we have recently been involved in, BLG acted for two interested parties in the Supreme Court of Canada case on physician-assisted death. A feature article will provide you with details of our involvement in the case and how we argued successfully for our clients.

In addition, we highlight one of the top ten business risks that our clients, particularly those in the energy and resources sector are facing today – the importance of "social license" in connection with your business.

Through the quarterly Alumni Newsletters, we've kept you up-to-date on the progress being made as we implement our Strategic Plan. Most recently, we have recruited two key executives — Rob Morris and Phil Donnelly — for the respective positions of Chief Operating Officer and Chief Talent Officer. Rob has been instrumental so far in designing and implementing many of the necessary changes to the firm's systems and processes to move us forward, and Phil will play an important role in fostering a positive culture and attracting the right people and developing the skills to continue to provide the best service to our clients.

I wish you a safe and enjoyable summer. Whether you are reading this issue in the office or on a dock, we welcome your feedback and suggestions at Alumni@blg.com, or through our LinkedIn alumni group.

Sincerely,

Sean Weir
National Managing Partner and CEO
