Welcome to the fall 2013 edition of the BLG Alumni Newsletter. As we near the end of the year, we can certainly look back with pride at some of the milestones BLG has achieved in 2013.

One such milestone is the 10th anniversary of the BLG Reads to Kids Program. This initiative, overseen by the National BLG Reads to Kids Committee, operates in each of our six offices across the country.

Weekly, approximately 300 BLG volunteers visit classrooms across the country, sitting with children and introducing them to the delightful world of books and reading. The program not only helps ignite a love of reading in the children participating, but it also helps them become more confident readers in their own right.

In recognition of the program’s 10th anniversary and the growing need that it fills, BLG Reads to Kids is expanding its mandate by launching a new initiative aimed at addressing some of the specific literacy issues Canada’s Aboriginal communities face.

Another milestone is BLG’s first Corporate Responsibility Report. As an organization, the Firm is committed to doing work that advances social issues such as diversity and inclusion, access to justice and children’s literacy.

However, what is even more interesting and speaks to the calibre of the BLG team, is the fact that many of our people reflect the Firm’s commitment to social responsibility in their own personal lives, making the time to give back to the causes that they find personally worthwhile and rewarding.

The report, titled What We Do Matters, highlights the pro bono work, charitable donations, academic scholarships as well as the BLG Reads to Kids program. I encourage you to download a copy of BLG’s 2013 Corporate Responsibility Report to read more about the programs and services we provide to our communities.

In closing, I would like to thank you for your continued participation in the BLG Alumni Program. Our program is a great way to foster relationships with your former BLG colleagues and expand your own professional network.

We are delighted that you stay connected and of course we appreciate hearing from you too. If you have any ideas on how we as a firm can strengthen our own relationship with you, please do not hesitate to contact me directly at sweir@blg.com or you can contact our Alumni Committee at alumni@blg.com.

On a final note, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very warm and happy holiday season and all the best personally and professionally for 2014.

Sincerely,
Sean Weir
