On October 12, 2004, the Federal Cabinet issued exemption orders for organizations in Alberta and British Columbia. As a result, organizations that operate solely in Alberta, or solely in British Columbia, are subject to the respective provincial Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and no longer have to comply with the Federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) when dealing with personal information. These organizations can now focus on the respective provincial PIPA in designing their compliance programs.
