How will the Liberal minority government that emerged from the June 28, 2004 federal elections work? The key objective for this new government will be to find the necessary support from the opposition parties to stay in office long enough to build the additional political support in the country needed to win a majority in the next election. The Liberals have the benefit of having policy positions on a number of different issues that are in line with those of the NDP and the Bloc. The Liberals will continue many of their existing policies and positions whether it be in foreign policy generally, or domestic economic plans. Some in the government will see the election result more as a reaction to the sponsorship scandal than a rebuke of Liberal policies. It will be the presentation and implementation of those old and new policies that will require a deft political touch that seems to have escaped the Martin team throughout the election.
