The Hon. Doug Mitchell and his wife, the Hon. Lois Mitchell

Calgary (May 13, 2016) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that His Honour, HCol. Douglas H. Mitchell, CM, AOE, QC, and his wife, Her Honour, the Hon. Lois Mitchell, CM, AOE, LLD, Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, have received the 2016 Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service. The Mitchell's were selected for this prestigious honour by the Woodrow Wilson Center's Canada Institute, and join the ranks of previous winners including the Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper, P.C., M.P., the Hon. Peter Lougheed, P.C., C.C., Q.C., and Stephen Lewis, C.C.

"The Mitchell's have dedicated their lives to serving the needs of the public, both on the local and national level," said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO at BLG. "Through initiatives such as the BLG Awards, Doug and Lois have provided significant support to student athletes to help them continue their academic studies, and have served countless other charitable and not-for-profit organizations, providing their leadership and guidance to help improve the lives of Canadians."

Mr. Mitchell is the national co-chair of BLG and counsel in the firm's Calgary office. Prior to practicing law, he played professional football with the Canadian Football League's BC Lions, and later took a five-year leave of absence from BLG to serve as the Commissioner of the Canadian Football League from 1984-89.

The Woodrow Wilson Award for Public Service is selectively handed out by the Canada Institute to individuals who have served with distinction in public life. Recipients of the award have invested their time, talents and resources into improving the lives and futures of others. Honourees include policymakers, philanthropists, scientists, civic and religious leaders, and celebrities who have excelled in their fields while leaving a deep, positive impact on their communities and the world at large.

In addition, the Canada Institute bestowed the Woodrow Wilson Award for Corporate Citizenship to Michael Tims, CBV, LLD, who serves as vice chairman at MATCO Investments Limited. The awards were handed out on May 12 at a gala dinner in Calgary.
