Toronto (February 6, 2015) — The 2015 Benchmark Litigation Canada Awards honoured Daniel Urbas, and his team at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) with the Pro Bono Firm of the Year award for their work in the internationally recognized Luka Rocco Magnotta trial in support of the victim, student Lin Jun’s family. BLG also won the Firm of the Year award in Alberta.

“Although he is an excellent litigator, Daniel is also known for his generosity, which truly showed through his actions of reaching out to the family of Lin Jun and the support he and his team gave to the family throughout the difficult trial, over and above the legal work,” said John Blair, national group head of the Commercial Litigation Group at BLG. “We are all extremely inspired by his humanitarian gesture and humbled by this recognition. Daniel has brought honour to himself, our law firm and to the legal profession as a whole.”

BLG’s Amélie T. Gouin, Ève Gaudet, Marie-Claude Lassiseraye-Mathieu and Jean-Philippe Herbert worked with Mr. Urbas on the case, and André Barette and William Dion-Bernard were involved in the creation of the Lin Jun Family Trust.

BLG has one of Canada’s leading dispute resolution practices, with a reputation for providing clients with excellent service in commercial litigation and arbitration matters, including many specialized areas of litigation.

“I am very proud of our litigation team in Alberta. This recognition reflects the level of expertise and quality of service our clients receive from BLG,” stated Blair.

The Benchmark Canada Awards, now in its third year, recognize the top litigation firms across the country for the gravitas of their case matters during 2014, including potential precedents set or verdicts with notably high dollar amounts at stake. The national level “Firm of the Year” and “Litigator of the Year” awards go to firms and individual litigators recognizing excellence in one of 10 practice areas.
