Toronto (October 11, 2013) – Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) welcomes Michelle Henry as a partner to the Firm’s Labour and Employment Group, effective October 1, 2013.

Michelle was previously a partner at BLG until March 2012 when she left the Firm to join FedEx as in-house counsel, working in the area of federal employment related legislation.

“Michelle is widely regarded as a strong advocate for her clients with a broad legal background in employment and labour relations litigation,” said Sean Weir, national managing partner and CEO. “Having worked in-house as Corporate Counsel, Michelle well understands the importance of knowing her clients’ business and providing practical solutions that meet both their legal and business needs.   We are very pleased to welcome her back to the Firm.”

Michelle has extensive experience in the provision of advice to employers during the collective bargaining process (including at negotiations, mediation and conciliation), interest arbitrations, collective agreement interpretation, grievance arbitrations, strikes and lockouts, and injunction proceedings during strikes.

She has appeared before numerous administrative tribunals, including the Canadian Human Rights Commission, Ontario Labour Relations Board and Canada Industrial Relations Board. She has also offered skilled counsel in union campaigns, union certification applications, unfair labour practice applications, appeal of inspectors’ orders, and unlawful reprisals applications.

“Michelle has a reputation of providing solid representation to employers on workplace issues of employment law, workplace safety and labour relations,” said Matthew Certosimo, BLG’s Labour and Employment Group’s national leader. “She is well versed in both the provincial and federal sectors, union and non-union environments, and we are delighted that she has returned to BLG.”

In addition to her legal practice, Michelle is a Board Member of Loft Community Services and has written and spoken extensively on employment, education and pension topics. A graduate of the University of Toronto Law School (J.D. in 2002), she obtained her M.A. in English from the University of Toronto in 1999 and was called to the Ontario bar in 2003.
