Toronto (February 22, 2013) — Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) is pleased to announce that the Honourable Dennis O’Connor, QC, counsel to the Firm’s litigation practice, was recognized with The 2013 Advocates' Society Medal, the highest expression of esteem that the Society can convey to one of its members.

A prestigious honour, The Advocates’ Society Medal acknowledges those who have demonstrated their pre-eminence as counsel, who are acknowledged as leaders of the bar, who have been dedicated and active members of The Advocates’ Society, and who have made a significant contribution to the profession of law and to the well-being of the community at large.

“We know Dennis has had an extraordinary career to date, and it is wonderful to see the profession celebrate that,” said Sean Weir, BLG’s national managing partner. “We are extremely proud of his accomplishments and the breadth of experience he brings to the Firm.”

Highly recognized for his role leading the Walkerton and Arar inquiries, Dennis was appointed to the Court of Appeal for Ontario in 1998. He served as the Associate Chief Justice of Ontario from 2001 to 2012. Dennis attended Osgoode Hall Law School (LLB, 1964) and was called to the Bar of Ontario in 1966. In 1980, he was appointed Queen’s Counsel and, from 1980 to 1998, he practised a broad range of litigation with one of BLG’s predecessor firms, Borden & Elliot in Toronto. Dennis also served as a Magistrate in the Yukon Territory, acted as chief negotiator for the Government of Canada in the Yukon Indian Land Claim and served as a Deputy Supreme Court Judge in the Yukon Territory. Dennis recently returned to BLG as counsel and mentor to young lawyers at the Firm.

“The Advocates’ Society Medal honours those who have demonstrated their pre-eminence as counsel and leaders of the bar and who have been dedicated and active members of The Advocates’ Society. Lastly, it is for those who have made a significant contribution to the profession of law and the well-being of the community at large,” said Peter Griffin, President of The Advocates’ Society. “The Honourable Dennis O’Connor exemplifies each of, and the combination of, those attributes. The Society is delighted to award The Advocates’ Society Medal to him.”

The 2013 Advocates’ Society Medal Dinner was held on February 21, 2013 in Toronto and featured keynote speaker The Honourable Justice Eleanore A. Cronk, Court of Appeal for Ontario.
