September 16, 2010 – The 2010 Canadian Pro Bono Awards have recognized Borden Ladner Gervais LLP (BLG) with the Canadian National Law Firm Award for contribution to the delivery of pro bono legal services across the country.

“BLG's commitment to deliver results goes far beyond the walls of our offices. Through our pro bono initiatives we are able to extend this commitment to help make the communities in which we live and work a better place,” said Sean Weir, BLG's national managing partner. “The firm is proud of our work across the country to improve access to justice and we look forward to maintaining a culture in which our professionals are always encouraged to engage in pro bono work.”

BLG is involved in many major pro bono initiatives across Canada, from providing legal advice and education to at-risk youth and their families through the Children's Legal Education Resource Centre in Calgary and the Dr. Julien Foundation in Montréal, to helping Toronto's The Stop Community Food Centre with a major redevelopment project. Lawyers at BLG have also successfully prevented an Ottawa school board from eliminating $5 million in funding for special-needs programs, and will be acting in opposition of the decriminalization of polygamy in a Vancouver trial this fall.

Recipients of the Canadian Pro Bono Awards must demonstrate dedication to the development and delivery of pro bono legal services and contribute significant work toward developing innovative approaches to delivering volunteer legal services. Recipients must demonstrate leadership in improving access to justice in their local areas on behalf of individual clients, communities and charitable organizations.

The awards will be presented on Thursday, September 16, 2010 as part of the upcoming 3rd National Pro Bono Conference, being held in Calgary, Alberta at the Fairmont Palliser Hotel.
