Borden Ladner Gervais (BLG) LLP's Rino Stradiotto will receive the Ontario Bar Association's Award for Distinguished Service on December 1, 2006 in honour of his exceptional contributions to the legal profession in Ontario.

Rino was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1975 and was inducted as a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers in 1984. In the 1970’s, Rino helped shape product liability law in Canada through his role as counsel in numerous product liability cases, his participation in educational seminars and through his many publications. He developed international stature as author of the Canadian Segment of Product Liability: A Manual of Practice in Selected Nations, 1981.

Rino also acted as counsel to the court appointed liquidator in one of the largest international liquidations, which afforded him the opportunity to broaden his knowledge of international legal systems. In 1990, Rino was awarded the Law Society of Upper Canada’s prestigious Law Society Medal in recognition of his contribution to the legal profession, generally and in particular to the area of health law.

As one of Canada’s top health law lawyers, Rino has been described as the “Dean of the Canadian health law bar”. His experience in the defence of hospitals, advising on policies and protocols, hospital by-laws, disputes on privileges of surgeons and doctors, human rights issues, consent to treatment requirements, privacy, Coronor's inquests, and governance issues has made him one of the health industry's most respected legal advisor. Rino has given back to his community as President of the Medico-Legal Society in 1986 and was President of the Advocates Society in 1988.
