Summary

BLG’s Maritime Law Group serves Canadian and international clients throughout the marine industry, including shipping lines, shipowners and operators, charterers, terminal operators, P&I clubs, H&M underwriters and general marine insurers. We act as legal correspondents to a number of P&I clubs around the world, while providing practical and proactive advice to meet the needs and challenges of the marine industry.

BLG is at the forefront of maritime law development, and is often involved in the leading judicial decisions which form the essence of maritime law in Canada. We assist clients in submissions before Parliamentary Committees and during government inquiries, act for clients in the context of investigations by the Transportation Safety Board, Transport Canada, and Canadian Coast Guard, and regularly appear before all levels of our judiciary including the Supreme Court of Canada, various Courts of Appeal, trial level and administrative tribunals, including the Canadian Transportation Agency, and foreign and domestic arbitral tribunals.

  • Regularly advise shipping lines, shipowners, operators, charterers, and NVOC`s around the world in such areas as casualty investigations, environmental incidents, collisions, charter party issues, cargo claim defence, arrest of vessels, regulatory matters, vessel sale and finance, and general commercial activity involving marine property.
  • Charter party and other disputes in arbitration and judicial proceedings in Canada, including shipyard and ship repair disputes.
  • Customs and Regulatory advice to shipowners, liner operators and terminals in Canada.
  • Advice on coverage and liability issues for P&I clubs and other marine insurers.  
  • Leading advice in the area of Canadian Arctic Navigation.
