Advised on and implemented global succession and estate plans using Trusts and Anstalten (Foundations) for Canadian members of Chinese HNW and UHNW families where the members of that family reside for tax purposes in Canada, in China and in other countries.Advised on and implemented an innovative estate plan for a Canadian family having assets over CAD200 million whereby Canadian taxes upon death or a departure from Canada may be minimized.Created corporate and trust structures to successfully transfer wealth in a tax-efficient manner to successive generations while maintaining control with the family’s business leaders without any Canadian connection.Advised on and implemented a corporate reorganization for a wealthy Canadian individual whereby his capital losses could be monetized by his private company.Advised on and implemented non-resident trust structures for new immigrants to Canada whereby Canadian taxes could legally be minimized or avoided and capital may be repatriated to Canada without taxation or reporting.Represented and assisted an offshore financial institution with a court application outside Canada but with the agreement of the Canada Revenue Agency to minimize the Canadian taxation of a non-resident trust of which the institution was the trustee.Advised on and implemented tax-efficient offshore structures of non-residents of Canada for investment in Canadian real estate projects with costs of up to CAD300M.Advised on and implemented asset protection and family governance plans for a number of HNW and UHNW families in South East Asia and the Middle East who have no connection to Canada as part of a team of advisers or as leader of the team of advisers.Represented UHNW families to avoid severe fines and penal sanctions through voluntary disclosures to Canadian tax authorities.Advised UHNW families to correct various deficiencies in their trusts and corporate structures through the strategic use of rectifications or the application of the principles of Hastings v.
