Executive Summary

Patrick Foy is the Vancouver Regional Leader of our Public Law Group. Patrick focuses his practice on appellate and judicial review, Aboriginal law and investor-state arbitration, and is recognized as one of Canada’s leading lawyers in these areas of law by the foremost legal rankings publications. 

Patrick is an appointed Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, a status reserved for less than one per cent of all practising lawyers of any state or province, and was appointed Queen’s Counsel in 1998. Before being called to the bar, Patrick clerked with the British Columbia Court of Appeal.

Representative Work

  • Counsel for numerous commercial clients and public bodies in the appellate courts, including many, many cases before the Court of Appeal for British Columbia and many cases before the Supreme Court of Canada.
  • Counsel at all levels of court for the Crown and for private clients on Aboriginal rights and title claims made by First Nations.
  • Assisted counsel to the Government of Mexico in the conduct of the defence of a number of Chapter Eleven Investor-State arbitrations initiated against the Government of Mexico.

  • Speaker / course coordinator for all Continuing Legal Education Society of British Columbia sessions on appellate advocacy, 1984-present.
  • Author of various articles on appellate advocacy, Aboriginal law issues, and investor-state arbitration.
  • Guest lecturer, University of British Columbia Faculty of Law, Advocacy Seminar.
