Kate's disputes practice is focused on civil litigation, specializing on complex medical malpractice and public law actions, and class actions.

Outside of civil litigation, Kate practices administrative law with a special focus on physician credentialing issues. Kate also represents health care clients before tribunals, public inquiries, inquests and other types of proceedings.

Kate also provides day-to-day general counsel-type advice to executive teams at hospitals, long term care facilities and retirement homes, providing strategic day-to-day advice on risk management, crisis response and policy issues.

  • Kate was lead counsel representing the Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in defeating certification in a proposed class action regarding the Motherisk Drug Testing Laboratory: R.G. v The Hospital for Sick Children 2018 ONSC 7058,R.G. v.   • Pierro v. Hospital for Sick Children, 2016 CanLII 22788 (ON HPARB)- successfully representing the Hospital in resisting the jurisdiction of HPARB on the matter of a proposed interim suspension from an administrative position pending an investigation, companion case to Dr. Agostino Pierro v. The Hospital for Sick Children, 2016 ONSC 2987 (CanLII).
  • Toronto East General Hospital (now Toronto East Health Network) - representing the Hospital at the JKE Inquest, a triple inquest into police encounters with people in crisis.
  • Goudge Inquiry into Paediatric Forensic Pathology – representing the Hospital for Sick Children in the Goudge Inquiry.
  • Scott v. Quinte Health Care Corporation, 2012 CanLII 31018 (ON HPARB) – representing the hospital at the Health Professionals Appeal and Review Board regarding the privileges of Dr. Peter Scott.
